True Spirituality in the New Millennium, Part II

THE SPIRITUAL LIFE

Spirituality is connection, communication and communion with the living God through the Lord Jesus Christ by means of the filling of the Spirit. We are made in the image of God, who is Spirit, and made to have fellowship with Him. We are eternal beings in need of spiritual food to prosper, mature and develop. And spiritual maturity brings glory to our Maker and fulfills the reason we were created.

A spiritual life is a life of faith, dedication, and loyalty to the Lord Jesus Christ, who is the way, the truth and the life. Apart from Christ, no one can come to the Father. And the good news, no one will be cast aside who seeks the Father with a humble heart.

The spiritual life is our means by which we love God, praise and worship God, and show our gratitude and thanksgiving for all the glorious benefits we have in Christ Jesus.

The spiritual life is the life Christ lived and our example to follow. One might sum up the attitude of the spiritual with these words of Christ:

  • "I always do the things that are pleasing to Him." John 8:29
  • "I do not seek My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me." John. 5:30
  • "My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to accomplish His work." John. 4:34

THE HEART'S DESIRE OF CHRIST JESUS

Jesus sought to do one thing with His life: glorify God, and so He did. Now there is something wonderful and holy I wish to share with you...something I have not shared with you till now. I do so with fear and trembling and remove the sandals from my feet.

Christ accomplished His work. He carried His cross. He did so without complaint, murmuring, or running off at the mouth how unfortunate He was. He sought nothing for Himself but ONE thing.

He refused to be made king by the people. He refused world power, glory, and fame offered by Satan. He refused to be thwarted from His destiny at Calvary even by His disciples. He sought no earthly treasure, reward, or fame. But He did seek ONE thing from God. He had ONE desire on His heart and in His mind. He longed for this ONE thing from the moment He was born. Have you yet discovered His longing?

What Christ sought for Himself was revealed to His select few-the disciples. Jesus was with them in the upper room. He death was imminent; His departure near. The Apostle John has forever recorded for us the heart of Christ during His final hours before His crucifixion.

Jesus lifted up His eyes to heaven and said,

"Father, the hour has come; glorify Thy Son, that the Son may glorify You even as Thou gavest Him authority over all mankind, that to all whom Thou hast given Him, He may give eternal life. And this is eternal life, that they may know Thee, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom Thou has sent. I glorified Thee on the earth, having accomplished the work which Thou hast given Me to do."

And now my friends, Christ reveals His heart's desire...His own personal desire. Let us read these words with humble hearts.

"And now, glorify Thou Me together with Thyself, Father, with the glory which I ever had with Thee before the world was."

This was Christ' heart's desire to have the glory He had with the Father before the world was and before man was created and then sinned. He sought what He freely gave up.

"Although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond servant, and being made in the likeness of men", Phil. 2:6

Now, that Christ accomplished that which God laid upon His shoulders, He now sought the glory which He had before in Heaven with His Father. He came to this world to show us the father and to teach us the spiritual life through belief in Him. With this accomplished, He now sought to return to the Father in Heaven. And this He would indeed have after His ultimate sacrifice act of obedience...death upon the cross.

The spiritual man or woman has the same attitude as Christ. He seeks to accomplish the work God has called him to do. He does not seek earthly glory, for it would only be temporary and distract him from his goal. In fact, earthly success often leads to heavenly failure. No, he seeks to glorify God. And God in turn will glorify him.

The spiritual life is a life of reverence to the One true God, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob... God of Joseph, David, and Solomon. God is the God of the living, and those who truly live live unto God through Christ Jesus. If we are to truly experience things beyond our wildest imaginations, let us experience heavenly things. These things are wonderous and have eternal value and significance. Let us not be distracted or detoured by man's rapid technological advances and the promises they offer. And though indeed they may be good in and of themselves, they are not to be our focus. Our destiny and home is in heaven, so let us get things in order (our spiritual life) before we take permanent residence.

"Oh, God, our heavenly Father, we thank you for all You have taught us and provided for our well being. We enter into this New Millennium with faith in your Son Jesus Christ to meet our every need, calm our every fear, and enrich us with your every word. We seek your glory through living the spiritual life. May we ever keep our focus on Thy Son, Jesus Christ and remain filled with the Spirit. We ask for wisdom and that we might share your glory in Heaven. Amen."
