INTERPRETATION:
EXPOSITION:Luke differs from Matthew and Mark here in that Luke adds an important descriptive term, it was trampled under foot. This is a key statement. We have all seen smokers, who, after inhaling their last drag, throw the last of their cigarette to the ground and crush it out under their foot. Why? Because it has no longer any value to them. That which has no value or worth to us is not afforded our attention, time, or effort. So when the gum has lost its flavor, it is discarded. Here we learn of a believer who doesn't value or esteem God's Word in terms of a spiritual life. He has come to believe in eternal life through Christ, but not the spiritual life. The spiritual life is a great mystery. It cannot be understood except by Faith. Sadly, too many churches, both denominational and charismatic, have failed to unlock its mysteries. Instead they have replaced the spiritual life with works, feelings, and religious experiences. Perhaps these, who are besides the way, have seen the hypocrisy of these churches and have turned away from the Word.
This is a tragedy. These must come to understand there is a true and legitimate spiritual life. It is there for any to find. And I believe, if their heart truly crys out for this spiritual life, God will direct he or she to a pastor/teacher who will enlighten them. For the spiritual life is as simple as living in a pleasing way before God within the Sphere of Faith (i.e., the filling of the Spirit).
